A great thing that I found out about while still pregnant is babywearing. It’s using a carrier instead of a stroller for your little one. There are all different kinds out there: wraps, soft pack carriers (like mei tais), ring slings, pouches, etc. etc. I first found out about BWing from the resources page on my midwife’s website. At that time, I was looking around for strollers. I went on Target, Walmart, Sears, and Babies R Us websites and saw how expensive strollers were. Most of them were what is called a travel system where there’s a car seat with a base and a stroller base and you can switch the car seat between those two bases. We don’t have a car, so I thought that would be kind of useless, plus they were really expensive. They start at around $100 and go upwards to about maybe $200-$250. Ouch. I worried about getting a used one because I didn’t know how safe it would be. Then I found this page and discovered that I didn’t need a stroller. I could wear him in a carrier instead. Depending on what kind of carrier you get, the prices can run anywhere from $20 to $150. You can buy used or even make your own for less.
I first bought a long sleeved kangaroo carrier shirt when Jamie was really little. I think he was only a few days old. That worked pretty well as an introduction to babywearing. I wasn’t confident enough to use a sling or anything at that point and I wanted something to get me comfortable with it and something that could do the job. After awhile, though, I got sick of having to wear the same shirt anywhere I would take Jamie, so I thought about getting another carrier. I made a friend on an online Attachment Parenting group in my area and she let me borrow a ring sling. I ended up buying one of my own after trying it, but now I’ve moved on to an Asian style carrier called a mei tai. The difference between these two is that the sling goes over one shoulder and the mei tai has straps for both shoulders. I like the MT a lot better because it’s a lot more self-explanatory than the RS is. I got a used Babyhawk (a really good kind of MT) for $50. Usually they’re $100 used, so it was a pretty good deal.
I don’t know *too* much about babywearing, but if you want more information, go to thebabywearer.com. There’s a lot of information on their site about the different types of carriers and there’s a forum there, too, where you can ask questions and eventually gain access to the for sale or trade section to get used carriers.
